Raga : Yaman-Kalyan
About Raga : Yaman-Kalyan
The Great Heritage is a 1966 studio album featuring North Indian classical music. His Master’s Voice released the recording on a 12\" vinyl format. The album captures a live-to-tape jugalbandi performance by sitarists Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Imrat Khan.
The sole track on Side A presents a 17-minute 42-second rendition of Raga Yaman-Kalyan. The performance showcases the Imdadi Khani gharana style through extended alap, jor, and jhala> sections followed by a composed gat in teental. Vilayat Khan employs the gayaki ang technique, mimicking vocal phrasing on the sitar, while Imrat Khan complements the interplay with rhythmic and melodic responses. Tabla accompaniment is present but the artist remains uncredited in available documentation.
The album cover and liner notes provide no additional session details, including recording location, producer, or engineering credits. The release date is confirmed as 1966 by the original HMV pressing matrix numbers. Later reissues on compact disc and digital platforms retain the original track but omit the vinyl’s side division.
Critics and historians cite The Great Heritage as an early documented collaboration between the Khan brothers, though comprehensive archival records of their joint performances before 1966 are incomplete. The recording predates Vilayat Khan’s wider international recognition in the 1970s and remains a reference for Yaman-Kalyan interpretations in the Imdadi tradition.
