Raga Marva

Ragas Marva · Sudda Saranga is a 1969 studio album featuring North Indian classical music. Sitarist Imrat Khan and vocalist Manikrao Popatkar performed the recordings. The label His Master’s Voice released the album on a 12\" vinyl format.

The album includes two primary raga performances. The opening track presents Raga Marva, a morning raga associated with the Marva thaat. The composition follows the traditional alaap-jor-jhala structure in instrumental rendition, with Khan’s sitar accompanied by tanpura and tabla. Popatkar’s vocal contribution appears in the second track, Raga Sudda Saranga, a raga linked to the Kafi thaat and often performed during late evening. The recording captures the khayal style with elaborate badhat and taans.

The vinyl release reflects the collaborative approach of the era, where instrumental and vocal traditions shared a single long-playing record. The liner notes and production credits remain undocumented in available sources. The album serves as an archival representation of the Etah-Binkar gharana influence in Khan’s sitar technique and the Gwalior gharana elements in Popatkar’s vocal delivery.
