Raga Hemant
About Raga Hemant
Ragas For Meditation is a studio album by Indian classical sitarist Nikhil Banerjee. Capitol Records released the recording in 1969 on a 12\" vinyl format. The album features traditional North Indian (Hindustani) raga performances adapted for meditative listening.
The B-side opens with Raga Hemant, a 24-minute and 55-second rendition that occupies track B1. Banerjee performs the raga on sitar without accompanying instrumentalists or vocalists. The composition adheres to the structural conventions of alaap, jor, and jhala, followed by a rhythmic exposition in madhyalaya (medium tempo) teental. The recording captures the introspective and slow-unfolding characteristics associated with the Hemant raga, traditionally performed during the early evening in winter.
Production details beyond the label, format, and release year remain undocumented in available sources. The album cover and liner notes do not credit a producer, recording engineer, or session musicians. Capitol Records marketed the release as part of a series introducing Indian classical music to Western audiences during the late 1960s. No reissues or digital remasters of Ragas For Meditation have been officially confirmed.
