About Raga Bageshree

The Maestro’s Musings is a studio album by Indian classical sarod virtuoso Amjad Ali Khan. The label CBS released the recording in 1986 on a 12\" vinyl LP. The album features Khan’s interpretation of traditional Hindustani raga compositions, showcasing his command of the sarod and the Senia Bangash gharana style.

The opening track Raga Bageshree occupies the A-side of the vinyl. Khan performs the raga in the late evening thaat tradition, emphasizing its lyrical and introspective character. The composition follows the alaap-jor-jhala structure before transitioning into a rhythmic exposition with tabla accompaniment. The recording captures Khan’s signature phrasing, marked by precise meend (glissando) and gamak (ornamentation) techniques. The track duration spans the entirety of the A-side, though exact timing remains undocumented in available sources.

The album’s production reflects the technical standards of mid-1980s classical recordings, with analog mastering tailored for vinyl playback. CBS distributed the release primarily in India, with limited international circulation. No reissues on digital or compact disc formats have been officially confirmed. Additional session musicians, including the accompanying tabla player, are not credited in the original liner notes.

The Maestro’s Musings aligns with Khan’s broader discography of the period, which includes collaborations with Western classical artists and solo recitals. The 1986 release precedes his later works under labels such as HMVD and Navras Records, where he expanded his fusion experiments while maintaining roots in pure classical performance.
