Explorations

Explorations is a collaborative studio album by Indian classical flautist Subroto Roy Chowdhury and American saxophonist and composer Steve Lacy. The album was released in 1987 under the German label jazzpoint in CD format.

The album features a fusion of North Indian classical music and avant-garde jazz. The third track, titled Explorations, spans 22 minutes and 33 seconds. This composition exemplifies the improvisational interplay between Roy Chowdhury’s bansuri flute and Lacy’s soprano saxophone, blending raga-based melodic phrasing with free-jazz harmonic experimentation. The recording session details, including additional musicians or production personnel, remain undocumented in available sources.

Roy Chowdhury contributed his expertise in the Hindustani classical tradition, while Lacy incorporated elements of his signature approach to jazz, including dissonant intervals and rhythmic abstraction.
