Bhatiali Dhun

Bhatiali Dhun is a composition featured on the 1968 album The Magic Flute of Pannalal Ghosh. Indian flutist Pannalal Ghosh performed the track as the third piece on Side B of the original 12\" vinyl release. The album appeared under the Odeon label.

The track exemplifies Ghosh’s adaptation of the bhatiali folk tradition, a genre originating from the riverine communities of Bengal. Ghosh employed the bass flute, an instrument he pioneered in Hindustani classical music, to interpret the melodic contours of bhatiali within a raga-based framework. The recording preserves his signature phrasing and breath control, characteristics central to his contributions to 20th-century Indian instrumental music.

The Magic Flute of Pannalal Ghosh compiled studio recordings that showcased Ghosh’s repertoire across classical, semi-classical and folk-inspired forms. The album’s liner notes credited Ghosh as the sole performer, though accompanying artists for rhythm or drone support remain undocumented in available sources. The vinyl’s original pressing included no explicit track timings, but later reissues approximated Bhatiali Dhun at seven to nine minutes in duration.

The release marked one of Ghosh’s final commercial recordings before his death in 1960, with Odeon issuing the material posthumously. The album’s production aligned with a period of renewed interest in archival recordings of first-generation Hindustani instrumentalists. No subsequent official remasters or expanded editions of the track have been confirmed.
