About Wanderlust
Wanderlust is a studio album by Indian-Canadian vocalist and composer Kiran Ahluwalia. Ahluwalia released the album on CD in 2007 under Times Square Records. The work marks her fourth official studio recording and expands on her fusion of traditional Indian classical music with global influences, including elements of Sufi poetry, ghazal, and contemporary arrangements.
Ahluwalia produced the album with contributions from musicians across India, Pakistan, and North America. The recording sessions incorporated acoustic instrumentation such as the sitar, tabla, harmonium, and guitar, alongside electronic textures. The lyrics draw from Urdu, Punjabi, and Persian poetic traditions, with compositions that blend raga-based melodies with modern production techniques.
The album contains ten tracks. Notable selections include Jo Dil, a ghazal that opens the record with sparse instrumentation and Ahluwalia’s vocal improvisations, and Merey Mathay, a composition rooted in the thumri style with rhythmic variations. Teray Darsan features a collaboration with Pakistani qawwali singer Faiz Ali Faiz, while Haal-e-dil adapts a poem by Mir Taqi Mir into a melancholic ballad. The track AKS incorporates a fusion of Sufi chanting and ambient soundscapes, and Jaag Na Jaag closes the album with a lullaby-like arrangement.
Times Square Records distributed the album internationally, with promotional events held in 2007 across North America and Europe. Critical reception highlighted Ahluwalia’s vocal control and the album’s cross-cultural synthesis, though specific commercial performance data remains undocumented. The release followed Ahluwalia’s prior collaborations with artists such as Toshi Reagon and her 2005 album Kiran Ahluwalia, further establishing her presence in the world music genre.
