About Vision
Vision is a studio album by Indian violinist and composer L. Shankar. Released in 1984 under ECM Records, the album marked Shankar’s collaboration with producer Manfred Eicher and featured a fusion of Carnatic classical traditions with contemporary jazz and ambient textures. The recording adopted a minimalist production approach, emphasizing Shankar’s double violin technique and layered improvisations.
The album comprises five original compositions. The opening track All for You introduces a meditative interplay between violin and synthesizers, establishing the record’s atmospheric tone. Vision, the title track, expands on Shankar’s use of microtonal phrasing and rhythmic cyclicity, while Astral Projection incorporates electronic effects to create a spacious, hypnotic soundscape. Psychic Elephant shifts toward a more percussive and rhythmic structure, blending South Indian tala patterns with synthesized basslines. The closing piece, The Message, returns to a lyrical, introspective mode, featuring extended violin solos over a subdued harmonic bed.
Vision was issued on compact disc in 1984 as part of ECM’s New Series imprint, which focused on cross-cultural and experimental works. The release event coincided with Shankar’s European tour that year, though specific performance dates remain undocumented in available sources. The album’s artwork, designed by Barbara Wojirsch, reflects ECM’s signature aesthetic with a monochromatic photograph of Shankar in performance.
Critical reception at the time noted the album’s departure from conventional Indian classical presentations, though commercial sales figures and chart positions are not publicly recorded. Shankar’s work on Vision preceded his later collaborations with artists such as Peter Gabriel and Frank Zappa, solidifying his role in global fusion music. The original CD pressing remains the primary format, with no confirmed reissues or remasters as of the latest available information.
