About Sitar-Nawaz
Sitar-Nawaz is an Indian classical music album by sitar virtuoso Vilayat Khan. His Master’s Voice released the album in 1965. The release appears on a 12-inch vinyl record and carries official status.
Vilayat Khan performs three extended compositions on the album. The first track presents Raga Barawa, a morning raga that follows the Barawa thaat. The second track features Raga Shankara, a pentatonic raga associated with the late evening. The third track is a light classical dhun set in the Gara parent scale. Each performance adheres to the traditional alap-jod-jhala-gat structure of instrumental khayal.
The album documents Vilayat Khan’s Imdadkhani gharana style. He employs meend, krintan, and zamzama techniques throughout the recordings. The tanpura provides the drone, and tabla accompaniment appears in the gat sections. The original vinyl pressing lists no additional musicians.
