About Shafqat Ali Khan
Dance of My Soul is a studio album by Pakistani classical and Sufi vocalist Shafqat Ali Khan. Khan released the album on April 11, 2000, under the American record label Hearts of Space Records. The work marked his first international solo project outside South Asia and featured a fusion of traditional Qawwali, Khyal, and light classical elements with ambient and world music production.
Khan composed and performed all eight tracks on the album. The recording sessions incorporated live instrumentation, including tabla, harmonium, santoor, and acoustic guitar, alongside electronic textures. The title track Dance of My Soul opens the album with a slow-building alap-like introduction, transitioning into a rhythmic composition blending Raag Yaman and folk melodies. My Restless Heart follows with a faster tempo, drawing from the Thumri tradition and featuring improvised vocal taans. Dust to Dust and Ashina explore themes of impermanence and longing, the latter based on a Persian ghazal adapted by Khan.
The second half of the album includes Valley of Memories, a semi-classical piece with sparse arrangement, and Stolen Dreams, which integrates Sufi poetic verses with minimalist percussion. Sleeping World adopts a meditative tone, while Stay, My Love concludes the record with a fusion of Raag Bhairavi and contemporary ambient layers. The production team included American engineer Steve Hillage, who handled mixing and sound design, and Indian tabla player Aneesh Pradhan, who contributed to the rhythmic sections.
The album was issued exclusively on compact disc in a digipak format with liner notes by Khan and producer Stephen Hill. Hearts of Space Records promoted the release through its syndicated radio program and specialty music retailers in North America and Europe. Critical reception at the time noted Khan’s vocal control and the album’s cross-genre experimentation, though specific sales figures or chart performances remain undocumented. No subsequent reissues or expanded editions have been confirmed.
