About Sarod Trilogy
Sarod Trilogy is a studio album by Indian classical musician Amjad Ali Khan, released on November 30, 2004, under Navras Records. The album presents a three-movement exploration of Raga Bageshwari in the dhrupad-ang and khayal-ang styles, performed on the sarod. The recording captures Khan’s interpretation of the raga through traditional structural components, including alap, jor, jhala, and composed sections set to rupak taal and teental.
The album comprises three tracks. The first track, Raga Bageshwari: Alap, Jor and Jhala, opens with an unmetered alap that establishes the raga’s melodic framework. Khan develops the phraseology through jor (rhythmic elaboration) and transitions into jhala (fast-paced stroke work). The second track, Raga Bageshwari: Composition in Rupak Taal, introduces a fixed composition in the seven-beat rupak taal, showcasing Khan’s improvisational variations within the rhythmic cycle. The third and final track, Raga Bageshwari: Two Compositions in Teental, features two distinct compositions set to the sixteen-beat teental, emphasizing intricate taan patterns and layakari (rhythmic play).
The release format is a single compact disc with a total runtime of approximately 70 minutes. Navras Records produced the album as part of its classical music catalog, though specific recording locations, accompanying artists, and production personnel remain undocumented in available sources. The cover art and liner notes, where present, align with the label’s standard presentation for instrumental classical releases of the period.
Critically, the album exemplifies Khan’s command over the sarod’s technical and expressive range, particularly in his rendering of the Bageshwari raga—a morning melody associated with devotion and serenity. The absence of percussion or vocal accompaniment places the focus entirely on the sarod’s tonal depth and Khan’s phrasing. The 2004 release date positions the work within his mid-career discography, following his establishment as a leading exponent of the Senia Bangash gharana.
