About Sarangi and Tabla
Sarangi and Tabla is a collaborative studio album by Indian classical musicians Ustad Sultan Khan and Zakir Hussain. Released in 1991 under the label Moment! Records, the album features a duet format with Sultan Khan on sarangi and Zakir Hussain on tabla. The recording captures a live-in-studio interaction, emphasizing improvisation within the framework of North Indian classical music.
The album contains two extended tracks. The first, Rāg Bhūpālī, presents a traditional rāg in the evening thāt associated with serenity and devotion. Sultan Khan develops the melodic structure through ālāp, jor, and jhālā>, while Zakir Hussain accompanies with rhythmic elaborations in tīntāl. The second track, Rajasthani Folk Song, shifts to a lighter, regional folk style, incorporating rhythmic cycles and melodic motifs from Rajasthan. The interplay between the sarangi and tabla highlights the contrast between classical discipline and folk spontaneity.
The release format was a single CD, distributed internationally by Moment! Records. The album’s production retained the acoustic intimacy of the instruments, with minimal post-processing to preserve the organic dynamic range. No additional session musicians or overdubs are credited. The liner notes, where included, provided brief context on the rāgs and folk traditions represented but omitted detailed technical annotations.
The exact recording location and production personnel remain undocumented in widely available sources. The album’s reception contributed to the visibility of sarangi-tabla duets in global world music circuits during the early 1990s. Later reissues or digital remasters, if any, are not verified in public records.
