About Sadaayen
Sadaayen is a studio album by Indian classical sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, released in 2002 under the Navras Records label. The album presents a solo sarod performance in a traditional Hindustani classical format, accompanied by tanpura and tabla. The recording captures Khan’s interpretation of raga structures with an emphasis on alap, jor, jhala, and gat compositions.
The album comprises four tracks. The first three tracks center on Raga Kafi Kanada, a raga associated with the Kafi thaat. Khan begins with an Alap, Jor, Jhala exploration, followed by two gat compositions: one in Ada Chautaal (a 14-beat rhythmic cycle) and another in Teen Taal (a 16-beat cycle). The fourth track features a Bhajan based on Raga Charukesi, a Carnatic raga adapted into the Hindustani tradition. The bhajan retains devotional themes while incorporating classical embellishments.
The release format is a CD, distributed commercially in 2002. Navras Records, the producing label, specializes in Indian classical and fusion music. The album’s title, Sadaayen (transl. Echoes), reflects the resonant quality of the sarod and the improvisational depth of the performances.
