About Saaz
Saaz is a studio album of North Indian classical music released on November 1, 2011. The recording features sitarist Ustad Hidayat Khan and tabla player Enayet Hossain in a jugalbandi (duet) format. The label Aimrec issued the album in CD format as an official commercial release.
The album centers on a single raga, Shyam Kalyan, a late evening melody from the Kalyan thaat. The performance follows the traditional structure of a khayal-based instrumental recital. The three tracks document progressive stages of the raga’s elaboration: the opening Aalap, Jor & Jhala establishes the raga’s contours through slow, meditative phrasing; the second track presents a gat (fixed composition) in Vilambit Teental (slow 16-beat cycle); the finale delivers a gat in Drut Teental (fast 16-beat cycle), showcasing intricate taans (melodic runs) and layakari (rhythmic play) between the sitar and tabla.
Hidayat Khan performs on a full-bodied gandhar-pancham sitar, a variant known for its resonant bass strings and sustained tonal depth. Enayet Hossain accompanies on the tabla, employing the Punjab gharana style characterized by robust bass strokes and crisp treble modulation. The recording captures a live-studio ambience with minimal post-production, preserving the acoustic interplay between the instruments.
The release date coincided with a launch event on November 1, 2011, though specific venue or tour details remain undocumented in available sources. Critical reception and commercial performance metrics for Saaz are not widely published. The album serves as a representative example of the gayaki ang (vocal-style) sitar tradition associated with the Etawah gharana, of which Hidayat Khan is a prominent exponent.
