About Raga Bhimpalasi
Raga Bhimpalasi is a studio album by Indian classical sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, released in 1995. The recording presents a full exploration of Raga Bhimpalasi, a late-afternoon raga in the Kafi thaat, performed in the dhrupad-ang and khayal-ang styles characteristic of the Senia Shahjahanpur gharana. The album appeared under the India Archive Music label in CD format.
Khan structured the performance in four movements. The opening track features an extended alap, followed by jor and jhala, establishing the raga’s melodic framework through gradual tempo acceleration. The second track introduces a vilambit gat in rupak tal (7-beat cycle), showcasing Khan’s intricate fingerwork and the sarod’s resonant chikari strings. The third track transitions to a drut gat in tintal (16-beat cycle), emphasizing rhythmic complexity and improvisational taans. The closing piece, titled Raga ‘Tribute to America’, deviates from the primary raga and incorporates elements inspired by Khan’s international performances, though specific compositional details remain undocumented.
The album captures Khan’s collaboration with an unnamed tabla accompanist, whose identity is not credited in the original release. Recording sessions occurred in an unspecified studio, with production overseen by India Archive Music. The 1995 release marked one of Khan’s several recordings dedicated to single-raga expositions, aligning with his broader discography of instrumental classical albums from the 1980s and 1990s.
Critical reception and commercial performance data for Raga Bhimpalasi are not widely archived. The album remains a reference for students of the sarod and the Bhimpalasi raga, particularly for its adherence to the gayaki ang (vocal-style phrasing) technique. No reissues or remastered editions have been officially confirmed as of the latest available records.
