About Radha Madhavam
Radha Madhavam is a Carnatic vocal album by Indian classical musician Bombay Jayashri. The artist released the work in 1996 under the INRECO label. The album appeared in CD format and marked one of Jayashri’s early commercial recordings in the classical tradition.
The album contains ten tracks that feature compositions in Sanskrit, Kannada, and Tamil. Jayashri selected pieces from the repertoire of prominent composers including Tyagaraja, Purandara Dasa, and Mysore Vasudevachar. The tracklist opens with Mrugayada Raadha, a kriti in raga Kharaharapriya attributed to Tyagaraja. Other notable tracks include Narayana, a devotional song in Suddha Saveri; Karuna Sagarane, a composition in Shanmukhapriya; and Kannenna Kanne, a Tamil piece set to Kalyani raga. The album also features Aaye Giridhara, a bhajan in Malayamarutam, and Madhava Maamava, a kriti in Bhairavi.
Jayashri performed the vocals with instrumental accompaniment typical of Carnatic concerts. The recording session included violin, mridangam, and tambura support, though specific artist credits for the accompanying musicians remain undocumented in available sources. The album’s title Radha Madhavam reflects its thematic focus on devotional compositions centered around Krishna and Radha, aligning with the bhakti tradition.
The release date of the album coincides with its production year, 1996. INRECO distributed the CD in India, targeting audiences of classical and devotional music. The track Chaliye, a lighter composition in Shuddha Dhanyasi, and Krisha Nee Begane, a kriti in Yamunakalyani, conclude the selection. The album’s structure follows a progression from invocatory pieces to more elaborate kritis, adhering to the conventions of Carnatic concert presentations.
Critical reception and commercial performance details for Radha Madhavam are not widely documented. The album serves as an example of Bombay Jayashri’s interpretive approach to classical compositions during the mid-1990s. Later reissues or digital remasters of the recording, if any, are not verified in public records.
