The album released in 1985 under the His Master’s Voice label. The primary format was a 12\" vinyl LP, though later reissues may have included cassette or digital distributions. The recording session centered on extended raga explorations, adhering to the traditional gayaki ang (vocal-style) approach of the Imdadkhani gharana, to which Khan belongs, paired with Hussain’s dynamic rhythmic accompaniment in the Farrukhabad and Punjab gharanas.
The tracklist comprises four movements. The album opens with Raga Yaman Kalyan Alap Jor, a slow, meditative exposition of the evening raga Yaman Kalyan. This transitions into Raga Yaman Kalyan Vilambit Gat, a composed section in a deliberate, expansive tempo. The third track, Raga Suha Sugrai Drut Gat, accelerates into a fast-paced composition in the rare raga Suha Sugrai, culminating in a Jhala—a rhythmic, strummed climax. The album concludes with an interpretation of Raga Bhairavi, a morning raga often performed at the end of concerts for its emotive depth.
Nishat Khan performed on a custom Ravi Shankar-style sitar with a deep jawari (bridge curvature) to enhance tonal resonance. Zakir Hussain employed a dayan-bayan tabla set, utilizing intricate bol (syllabic) patterns and layered tihais (rhythmic cadences). The recording engineering preserved the acoustic intimacy of the session, with minimal post-production intervention to retain the spontaneity of the performance.
The album received recognition for its technical precision and the artists’ synergy, though specific sales figures or chart performances remain undocumented. It contributed to the global visibility of Hindustani classical music during the 1980s, a period marked by increased cross-cultural collaborations.
