Golden Milestones

Golden Milestones is a compilation album featuring recordings by Indian classical vocalist Kesarbai Kerkar. The label RPG released the album on CD in August 2003. The collection spans 16 tracks and showcases Kerkar’s interpretations of khayal, bhajan and semi-classical forms in the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana tradition.

The album opens with Ghutan Laagi Rain in Raga Lalat, followed by Mora Re in Raga Vibhas. Other notable tracks include Devi Durge in Raga Kukubh Bilawal, Hun to Jai Hun in Raga Jaunpuri and Mhare Dere Aao in Raga Desi. The selection also features Preetam Saiyan in Raga Lalita Gauri, Sur Sangat in Raga Tilak Kamod and the bhajan Mero Kya Bigadega. Additional compositions cover Raga Marubihag (Rasia Hun Na Jaaun), Raga Nat Bihag (Never Baju Re), Raga Nand (Baare Saiyyan) and Raga Paraj (Ankhiyan Mori).

Kesarbai Kerkar’s performances on this release reflect her mastery of intricate taans and emotive phrasing, characteristics of her gharana. The recordings originate from archival sources, though the exact dates of the original performances remain undocumented in the album’s liner notes. RPG produced the compilation as part of its series on legendary Indian vocalists, targeting audiences interested in historical classical recordings.

The 2003 release coincided with renewed interest in Kerkar’s legacy following her death in 1994. No alternate editions or reissues of Golden Milestones have been confirmed beyond the initial CD format. The album serves as a documented collection of her lesser-circulated works alongside more widely recognized compositions.
