Garima Vol. 2

Garima Vol. 2 is a studio album in the Hindustani classical tradition released on November 1, 2003. The recording features violinist N. Rajam and tabla player Zakir Hussain in a jugalbandi-style collaboration. The album appeared under the Legendary Legacy label as an official digital media release.

The album comprises six tracks that showcase a blend of raga expositions, bhajans, and semi-classical forms. The opening composition presents Rag Basant, a spring-season raga characterized by its use of komal ni (flattened seventh) in descent. This is followed by Rag Nilambari, a melodic structure associated with the late evening or early night raag tradition. The third track features a devotional Bhajan titled Janaki Nath, a composition often attributed to the bhakti repertoire.

The second half of the album begins with Thumri Khamaj, a light-classical piece set in the Khamaj thaat (parent scale), known for its lyrical and expressive delivery. Another bhajan, Payoji Maine, follows with its roots in the Meera bhajan tradition. The closing track, Bhairavi (Jogi Mat Je), draws from the early-morning Rag Bhairavi and incorporates folk-inflected devotional lyrics.

The collaboration marks a meeting of two distinct generational and stylistic approaches: Rajam’s adherence to the gayaki ang (vocal-style) violin tradition of the Maihar gharana and Hussain’s dynamic rhythmic innovations rooted in the Punjab gharana of tabla.
