About Classical Encounter
Classical Encounter is a studio album by Indian classical vocalist Girija Devi, released in 2008. The recording features performances in the Banaras gharana style of Hindustani classical music. EMI issued the album on compact disc as part of its classical music catalog.
Girija Devi presents three compositions on the album. The opening track showcases Raga Puria Dhanashri in a khayal format, beginning with the vilambit (slow-tempo) bandish Ali Meri Kaun Sune. The second track continues in the same raga with a drut (fast-tempo) khayal, Mana Ram Naam Ko Sumiran Kar. The album concludes with a thumri in Raga Khamaj, titled Javovahin Tum Shyam.
The release captures Girija Devi’s signature approach to khayal gayaki and semi-classical thumri, emphasizing intricate taan patterns and emotive phrasing. The accompanying artists remain uncredited in available sources. The album’s production details, including recording location and session dates, are not publicly documented.
EMI marketed Classical Encounter as a standalone release in 2008. The label did not associate the album with a specific series or commemorative event. The track selection represents a condensed sample of Girija Devi’s repertoire, focusing on her interpretations of traditional Bandish compositions.
