7 Billion is a studio album by Canadian-Indian vocalist and composer Kiran Ahluwalia. Released on April 6, 2018, the work marks her seventh full-length project and continues her fusion of ghazal, Indian classical music, and contemporary global sounds. The album appeared exclusively in digital media format with no associated record label.
Ahluwalia composed and produced the album’s six original tracks. The lyrics draw from Urdu poetry, Punjabi folk traditions, and modern thematic explorations of identity, migration, and femininity. The title 7 Billion reflects the artist’s engagement with universal human experiences against the backdrop of a rapidly globalizing world. Instrumentation blends sitar, tabla, electric guitar, and electronic textures, arranged in collaboration with session musicians.
The tracklist includes Khafa, a composition rooted in the raag Yaman scale with layered vocal harmonies; Saat, a rhythmic piece incorporating Punjabi folk beats and percussive improvisation; and Kuch Aur, a melancholic ballad featuring sparse tanpura accompaniment. Raina integrates qawwali-inspired call-and-response vocals, while Jhoomo employs a thumri-like structure with contemporary production. The closing track, We Sinful Women, adapts a poem by Pakistani feminist writer Kishwar Naheed, set to a minimalist arrangement of santoor and ambient synth.
Critical reception highlighted Ahluwalia’s vocal agility and the album’s cross-genre experimentation, though specific commercial performance data remains undocumented. Live performances of 7 Billion material occurred during her 2018–2019 international tour, including stops in North America, Europe, and South Asia.
