About Raga Jaijaivanti
Raga Jaijaivanti is a 1992 Indian classical music album by sitar maestro Vilayat Khan. The release presents a full-length performance of the raga Jaijaivanti in the traditional Hindustani classical format. The album consists of three tracks that follow the standard progression of an instrumental alap, vilambit gat, and drut gat.
Vilayat Khan performs the alap, the unmetered introductory section of the raga. He establishes the melodic framework of Jaijaivanti through slow, exploratory phrases. The alap transitions into the vilambit gat in Teental, a 16-beat rhythmic cycle. Khan develops the raga through intricate sitar compositions while accompanied by tabla. The final track features the drut gat in Teental, where Khan increases the tempo and introduces faster rhythmic patterns and improvisations.
The album captures Vilayat Khan’s signature gayaki ang style, which emulates vocal techniques on the sitar. His use of meend (glissando) and gamak (ornamentation) reflects the influence of khayal vocal music. The release does not credit a specific record label. The exact recording location and accompanying musicians remain unconfirmed in available sources.
Raga Jaijaivanti belongs to the Kafi thaat and is classified as a late-night raga. It combines elements of two parent ragas, Jaijaiwanti and Asavari, creating a somber yet devotional mood. The raga employs both komal (flat) and shuddha (natural) forms of the Re (second) and Dha (sixth) notes, along with a characteristic use of the Pa (fifth) note in descending phrases.
