About Classical Music From Pakistan

Classical Music From Pakistan is a 1959 studio album by Pakistani classical vocalist Nazakat Ali Khan. The release presents two extended performances of Hindustani classical ragas. Angel Records issued the album on vinyl in the United States, marking one of the earliest international distributions of Pakistani classical music.

Nazakat Ali Khan performs Raga Durbari as the opening track. The rendition follows the traditional vilambit (slow) and drut (fast) structure, showcasing khayal vocal technique. Khan employs meend (glissando) and gamak (ornamentation) to articulate the raga’s characteristic phrases. The performance includes alap, jor, and jhala sections, with tabla accompaniment entering in the drut portion.

The second track features Raga Kalavati. Khan adheres to the raga’s prescribed ascent (aroh) and descent (avroh) patterns, emphasizing its pentatonic scale. The composition incorporates bol-banav (rhythmic improvisation) and sargam (solfege) passages. The recording captures Khan’s use of taans (fast melodic runs) to develop the raga’s emotional contour.

The album’s production credits and additional personnel details remain unverified. No liner notes or supplementary materials accompany the original release. Classical Music From Pakistan remains a documented example of mid-20th-century Pakistani classical vocal artistry.
