KalaSudha Introduces Cloud-Based Notation Editor for Hindustani Classical Music
KalaSudha has introduced KalaSudha Composer, a cloud-based music notation editor developed for Hindustani classical music. The browser-based platform allows musicians to write and manage compositions digitally using the traditional Bhatkhande notation system.
The platform is designed for musicians, students, and teachers who work with Hindustani classical music notation. It allows users to create, store, and organise compositions directly through a web browser without requiring specialised software installation.
Digital Notation Editor
KalaSudha Composer includes a digital notation editor that supports writing compositions, such as bandish and sargam passages, in the Bhatkhande notation format. Users can edit and update compositions directly within the browser interface.
The editor includes visual markers that help organise musical phrases according to rhythmic cycles. Beat indicators and structural guides assist users in aligning notation with specific taal patterns.
Multi-Language Notation Support
The platform supports multiple Indian scripts for displaying musical notation. Users can view notes in scripts, including Devanagari, Bengali, Gujarati, and Punjabi, among others.
This feature allows musicians to work in the script most commonly used in their learning or teaching environment while maintaining the same musical structure.
Raga and Taal Organisation
KalaSudha Composer provides a platform for organising compositions by raga (melodic scale) and taal (rhythmic cycle). This allows users to create a structured collection of compositions within the platform.
Musicians can maintain a personal music library where compositions are categorised and stored digitally.
Composition Library and Access
The platform includes a personal music library where users can store compositions in a digital notebook format. Compositions saved in the system can be accessed from different devices through the cloud.
This allows musicians to manage their repertoire in a single, organised location.
Privacy and Sharing Controls
KalaSudha Composer includes several options for controlling access to compositions. Users can choose between three visibility settings:
- Private – accessible only to the creator
- Unlisted – accessible through a shared link
- Public – visible to other users on the platform
The platform also supports composition forking, allowing users to create new versions of existing compositions while preserving the original notation.
Octave Notation Support
The editor supports notation markers for the three octave ranges used in Hindustani classical music:
- Mandra (lower octave)
- Madhya (middle octave)
- Taar (upper octave)
These octave indicators are adapted across supported scripts to maintain consistency in notation.
Technical Architecture
KalaSudha Composer is built on an open-source technology stack and integrated into KalaSudha’s existing digital platform.
Notation data is stored using JSON-based formatting, which allows structured data storage and easier handling of compositions. The system also includes an API for saving and loading compositions within the platform.
Dedicated services manage swara rendering and notation validation, helping ensure that compositions follow the notation structure used in the editor.
MIDI Playback and Export
The platform includes MIDI playback and export functionality, allowing users to listen to a digital representation of their compositions. This feature can be used to review melodic structure and rhythmic alignment.
Device Compatibility
KalaSudha Composer uses responsive templates designed to work across multiple devices, including desktop computers, tablets, and mobile browsers. This allows users to view or edit compositions without relying on device-specific software.
Platform Development
KalaSudha Composer has been developed as a module within KalaSudha’s broader platform infrastructure. The system is intended to support digital documentation and organisation of Hindustani classical music notation.
The development team has indicated that further updates may expand the platform’s capabilities and refine the notation editor based on user feedback.
