Biography
Zohaib Hassan is a prominent young sarangi player from Pakistan, known for carrying forward the rich legacy of Hindustani classical music. He belongs to the prestigious Amritsar gharana, a well-known musical lineage of sarangi players. Coming from a deeply rooted musical family, he inherited his early training from senior family members who were themselves accomplished musicians. His lineage includes respected names such as Ustad Hussain Bukhsh Amritsari, Ustad Nathu Khan, Ustad Peeru Khan, and Ustad Abdul Hameed Khan, all of whom contributed significantly to classical music traditions.
Zohaib Hassan later became a disciple of Ustad Ghulam Haider Khan of the Qasur gharana, further strengthening his classical foundation. Through rigorous riyaaz (practice) and dedication to perfection, he developed a refined and expressive style of sarangi playing. Over time, he has established himself as one of the leading sarangi players of his generation in Pakistan. He has performed at major music conferences and has accompanied several renowned classical vocalists, including Ustad Raza Ali Khan, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan Hyderabadwale, Ustad Sharafat Ali Khan, Ustad Shafqat Salamat Ali Khan, and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan. His collaborations also include working with tabla maestro Ustad Bashir Khan, showcasing his versatility as both a soloist and an accompanist.
Zohaib Hassan has also gained international exposure through performances and collaborative projects. He performed at prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center in 2013 and participated in global initiatives aimed at bridging Eastern and Western musical traditions. As part of fusion groups like Melodic Intersect, he has contributed to albums that combine classical Indian sounds with global musical influences, expanding the reach of sarangi music worldwide.
Despite the sarangi being considered a declining instrument, Zohaib Hassan has played a crucial role in reviving its popularity among modern audiences. He is regarded as one of the top sarangi players in the world today and continues to strive for greater recognition on international platforms. Through his dedication, performances, and collaborations, he represents a new generation of classical musicians committed to preserving tradition while embracing innovation.
