About
Biography
Zargham Akram Khan is an emerging Indian tabla player associated with the Ajrara gharana, one of the important traditions within the Hindustani tabla lineage. He belongs to a musical family and is the son and disciple of noted tabla maestro Ustad Akram Khan, under whose guidance he continues his training in the classical repertoire and performance practice of the gharana.
Representing a younger generation of percussionists, Zargham Akram Khan has gradually begun presenting his artistry on stage through concert appearances and festival performances. His training places emphasis on the traditional structure of tabla playing, including compositions from the Ajrara repertoire, clarity of bols, and the practice of padhant, the vocal recitation of rhythmic patterns that form an integral part of tabla pedagogy.
He has appeared in several live concerts and classical music gatherings, including performances at events such as Malhar Utsav in Delhi and the 21st SaMaPa Sangeet Sammelan. In many of these performances, he shares the stage with his father, Ustad Akram Khan, presenting tabla in jugalbandi-style dialogues that highlight both traditional compositions and improvisational elements within the tala framework.
Through these performances, Zargham Akram Khan continues to engage with the evolving concert stage while maintaining the traditional aesthetics of the Ajrara gharana. Alongside his concert appearances, he also maintains a presence on digital platforms, where he occasionally shares recordings and glimpses of his ongoing musical journey.
As a young practitioner of Indian classical percussion, Zargham Akram Khan represents the continuation of a hereditary musical tradition while participating in the wider contemporary landscape of Hindustani classical music performance.
