Vinod Prasanna

Vinod Prasanna is an internationally recognized bansuri (bamboo flute) artist rooted in the Benares Gharana, representing a musical lineage spanning over 250 years. Born into a distinguished family of musicians in Varanasi, he received early training from his grandfather, Pandit Vishnu Prasanna, and later from his uncle Pandit Rajendra Prasanna. His playing is defined by expressive tonal quality, intricate improvisation, and a strong foundation in Hindustani classical music.

With over 25 years of experience, Vinod has performed extensively across India and internationally, including tours in France, Japan, and Germany, before settling in Australia in 2008. His performances span major festivals, academic institutions, and cultural events such as the Parliament of the World’s Religions and Woodford Folk Festival. In 2006, he was awarded the Sahara All India Flute Competition, marking a significant recognition in his early career.

Based in Melbourne, Vinod continues to work as a performer, teacher, and flute craftsman, contributing to both traditional and contemporary music contexts. He is actively involved in cross-genre collaborations, including projects blending Indian classical music with jazz and world music. His recordings, including albums such as Evening Thoughts and Samaya, reflect a diverse artistic practice that bridges classical tradition with global musical expression.
