Biography
Vimala Menon was born in Irinjalakuda in Kerala’s Thrissur district into a family engaged in professional and cultural life. She received her initial dance instruction from Thripunithura Vijaya Bhanu and also trained in Carnatic music under M. R. Madhusudhana Menon. In 1960, she joined Kerala Kalamandalam for a four-year diploma in dance, where she undertook rigorous training in Mohiniyattam under Thottassery Chinnammu Amma and Kalamandalam Satyabhama. Alongside this, she studied Bharatanatyam under Thanjavoor Bhaskara Rao, acquiring a grounding in multiple South Indian dance traditions.
After completing her studies, she worked as a dance teacher at the Jawahar School of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation. Following her marriage to Viswanatha Menon in 1966, she moved to Bhutan, where her husband served as a government officer. During her stay there, she taught dance in Bhutan Government schools and presented South Indian classical dance in various cultural settings, extending the reach of Indian dance traditions beyond India.
On returning to Kerala, Vimala Menon established the Kerala Natya Academy in Thiruvananthapuram. Through this institution, she structured long-term training in Mohiniyattam and related forms, focusing on technique, repertoire, and traditional aesthetics. The academy became a center for systematic pedagogy, producing students who went on to pursue professional and academic engagement with classical dance.
In addition to teaching and performance, her work has included research into form and repertoire. She received a Senior Fellowship from the Government of India in 2004 for her study titled “Ramanattom in Mohiniyattom,” reflecting her engagement with the historical and textual dimensions of the form.
Her contributions have been recognized through state and national honors, including the All Kerala Social Service Association Award for Bharatanatyam (1972), the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award (1991), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2006), the Kerala Kalamandalam Award for Dance, and the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship (2014). In 2026, she was conferred the Padma Shri by the Government of India in recognition of her long-standing contribution to Indian classical dance and dance education.
