Biography
Dr. Vilina Patra is a Hindustani classical vocalist rooted in the Mewati Gharana tradition. Her musical journey began at an early age under Shri Shyama Prasad Niyogi of the Vishnupur Gharana, where she received foundational training in classical music. This phase established discipline in riyaz and structural understanding of raga and tala.
She later trained under Dr. Ram Shankar Singh of the Ramrang Parampara, whose guidance shaped her raga development, phrasing, and interpretative depth. Her present training is under Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar, a leading representative of the Mewati Gharana. Under his tutelage, her music reflects the gharana’s emphasis on clarity of swara, emotional continuity, and structured raga development.
Dr. Patra combines performance with academic engagement. She holds a doctorate in music from S.N.D.T. Women’s University, Pune, for her research titled “An Analytical Study of Riyaz Techniques in Khayal Gayaki” under the guidance of Dr. Pournima Dhumale. Her doctoral work contributes to the pedagogical understanding of vocal practice in Hindustani music. She also has gold medals for both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.
She is a graded artist of All India Radio, Pune, in Hindustani classical vocal music. Alongside classical performance, she has recorded devotional compositions in Hindi and Marathi for established composers, reflecting engagement with semi-classical and devotional genres.
Her concert activity spans cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Jaipur, Goa, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Ahmednagar, and Aurangabad. Internationally, she has appeared in digital concert series curated by the CheerUp Foundation in California. She has also provided vocal accompaniment to her guru, Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar, at major festivals such as the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav (Pune), Pt. Motiram Pt. Maniram Sangeet Samaroh (Hyderabad), and the Gangubai Hangal Mahotsav (Hubli).
Her performance record includes appearances at platforms such as DevGandharva Sangeet Mahotsava, SwaraMalhar Festival, Mewati Sangeet Sammelan, Yuvaswaranubhuti Festival, Subah-e-Banaras, Ramrang Maasik Sangeet Samaroh, Wah Taj Baithak, and national academic seminars. Through these activities, Dr. Vilina Patra maintains an active presence within both the performance and scholarly domains of Hindustani classical music.
