Biography
Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan (1895–1962) was a Hindustani classical vocalist of the Agra Gharana, known for his contributions as both a performer and composer. He received early training from his father, Nathan Khan, and later from his uncles Kallan Khan and Mohammad Baksh, along with guidance from Faiyaz Khan.
He composed bandishes in various ragas under the pen name “Pran Piya,” which remain part of the Hindustani repertoire. His work reflects the Agra tradition’s emphasis on structured raga development and vocal technique.
As a teacher, he trained several musicians, including Mogubai Kurdikar, Jagannathbuwa Purohit, and Gajananrao Joshi. His lineage continued through his son Yunus Hussain Khan, associated with the same gharana.
