Vijay Natesan

Vijay Natesan is a highly talented and dynamic mridangam artist, widely recognized among the leading percussionists of the younger generation in Carnatic music. He began his training under Guru Shri T.S. Nandakumar, a veteran mridangam teacher based in Mumbai, and displayed remarkable promise from an early age, performing in concerts by the age of seven. He currently receives advanced training from mridangam maestro Padmabhushan Sangita Kalanidhi Shri T.V. Gopalakrishnan.
 

Over the years, Vijay has accompanied some of the most respected names in Indian classical music, including T.N. Krishnan, T.V. Gopalakrishnan, T.N. Seshagopalan, O.S. Thyagarajan, Sudha Raghunathan, Aruna Sairam, Kadri Gopalnath, and Ganesh–Kumaresh, as well as prominent next-generation artists like Abhishek Raghuram, Palghat Ramaprasad, Saketharaman, Ramakrishna Murthy, and Flute Jayanth.
 

In 2019, Vijay was awarded the Top Grade by All India Radio, becoming one of the youngest mridangam artists to achieve this distinction. He has also received a fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, for his research in the field of mridangam.
 

Vijay has performed extensively across India and internationally in countries such as the USA, UK, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Malaysia, and Singapore. His notable appearances include performances at the Akashvani Sangeet Sammelan, Le Guess Who Festival (Netherlands), Swathi Sangeethotsavam (Trivandrum), Doverlane Music Conference (Kolkata), and concerts organized by ICCR.
 

Beyond the concert stage, Vijay has collaborated with renowned artists, including Ustad Zakir Hussain and Shankar Mahadevan, and featured in projects like the HMV Saregama album Silver Lining and Jewels of Rhythm, produced by his guru. He has also been honored with the Kanchi Kamakshi Asthana Vidwan title by the Kanchipuram Mutt, a recognition he regards as one of his greatest blessings.
 

Rooted deeply in the Carnatic tradition yet open to diverse influences, Vijay draws inspiration from a wide range of musical forms, including Hindustani, ghazals, bhajans, and jazz, reflecting his versatile and evolving artistic spirit.
