Vasant Rai

Vasant Rai was born in 1942 into a Gujarati family from Unjha and grew up in a musical environment that led him toward Hindustani classical music. He became a disciple of Baba Allauddin Khan, the legendary guru of the Maihar gharana, and is often described as one of his last students. Rai’s sarod, reportedly a gift from his guru and crafted by Allauddin Khan’s brother Ayet Ali Khan in the 1930s, symbolised his close connection to this lineage.

Rai began visiting the United States as a teenager and eventually settled in New York City in 1969. Much of his life was centered around Greenwich Village, then an important hub for artistic exchange. From 1969 to 1985, he ran the Alam School of Music in Greenwich Village, where he taught both Indian and Western students. Among his Indian disciples were sarod player Pradeep Barot, mandolin player Emu Desai, and sitarist Shamim Ahmed Khan, while his Western students and collaborators included figures such as Don Cherry and Collin Walcott.

As a performer, Rai appeared in concerts across the United States and worked with leading tabla artists, including Alla Rakha, Mahapurush Mishra, Shamta Prasad, and Zakir Hussain. He also recorded commercially, including releases with EMI and later an exclusive period with Vanguard Records between 1975 and 1982. These recordings contributed to the presence of sarod music in the Western world-music and classical circuits of that era.

Vasant Rai passed away in 1985 in New York, shortly after a performance at Carnegie Hall. Though his life was relatively short, he is remembered as a dedicated performer and teacher who played a role in carrying the Maihar sarod tradition beyond India and into international musical spaces.
