Varun Rajasekharan

Varun Rajasekharan is an Indian percussionist recognized for his work on the ghatam, a traditional South Indian clay pot percussion instrument widely used in Carnatic music. Based in New Delhi, he is known for his ability to bridge traditional Carnatic rhythmic vocabulary with contemporary musical styles, including jazz, funk, and pop. His performances reflect a balance between classical percussion traditions and modern collaborative formats.

Over the years, Varun Rajasekharan has been associated with several contemporary ensembles and musical projects. Since 2015, he has served as the percussionist for The Revisit Project, a Delhi-based funk and jazz fusion band known for reinterpreting Indian music within modern groove-based arrangements. He has also collaborated regularly with the Anirudh Varma Collective, contributing to works such as Saraswati and Stories of Kalyan. In addition, he has appeared with groups and projects including TalFry, Rangrez, and the pop-fusion band Pakshee, where he was featured in the music video for the song Balma.

Rajasekharan is a regular performer on India’s concert and festival circuit. His appearances include performances at venues such as the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, as well as festivals including the Jaipur Literature Festival, Bangalore International Arts Festival (Hubba), Natya Tarangini’s Mahashivratri Festival in New Delhi, and VHAH Fest in Rajasthan. Through these performances and collaborations, Varun Rajasekharan continues to contribute to the evolving dialogue between Indian classical percussion traditions and contemporary musical expression.
