Vani Jairam

Vani Jairam (30 November 1945 – 4 February 2023), born as Kalaivani in Tamil Nadu, was a distinguished Indian playback singer whose contribution to Indian music remains unparalleled in scale and diversity. Trained initially in Carnatic music, she later mastered Hindustani classical forms, which enabled her to move seamlessly between film songs, classical-based compositions, bhajans, ghazals, and devotional music. Her musical foundation was strengthened through rigorous training under respected gurus, shaping a voice known for clarity, emotional depth, and technical precision.

Her entry into Hindi cinema with the film Guddi in 1971 brought her immediate national recognition, particularly through the classical-based song “Bole Re Papihara.” This success opened doors across regional film industries, and she soon became a preferred voice for composers in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, and several other languages. She was especially known for rendering challenging compositions that demanded strong classical grounding, earning her repeated critical acclaim.

Over the course of her career, Vani Jairam recorded songs for more than a thousand films and collaborated with many of India’s most influential composers. Her work received numerous honors, including three National Film Awards and the Padma Bhushan in 2023. Beyond playback singing, she was also involved in composition, writing, and visual arts, reflecting her broad artistic sensibility.
