Biography
Vaibhav Arekar is a prominent Bharatanatyam soloist, choreographer, and educator, widely recognized for his dynamic stage presence and deeply expressive approach to the classical form. A disciple of Saroja Srinath, he further refined his training under distinguished figures such as Kanak Rele and Thangamani Nagarajan. He holds both a BFA and an MFA from Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, grounding his practice in rigorous academic and performance-based learning.
As the founder and artistic director of Sankhya Dance Company, Arekar has established a distinctive voice in contemporary Bharatanatyam by exploring modern themes within a classical framework. His choreographic repertoire includes acclaimed productions such as Debotar Grash, Shrimant Yogi, Narmade Har Hara, and Naama Mhane, reflecting literary, spiritual, and historical narratives. His work is also shaped by theater training under Chetan Datar, which enhances the dramatic and narrative depth of his performances.
Arekar has presented his work at major national and international platforms, including the Khajuraho Festival and the Music Academy in Chennai, and has toured countries such as Japan, Brazil, Germany, and the United States. In addition to leading Sankhya Dance Company, he is associated with the Leela Dance Company and co-founded the YATRA Dance Festival in 2002, contributing to the promotion of diverse dance traditions. As an educator, he conducts workshops and structured training programmes through institutions like the Lasya Centre for Dance Education and Research, playing a significant role in shaping the next generation of dancers.
