Uttam Singh

Uttam Singh, born in 1948, developed an early connection with music through his father, a sitar player. After moving to Mumbai during his childhood, he trained in tabla and Western violin while also participating in devotional kirtans at gurudwaras. This early exposure shaped his rhythmic understanding and melodic sensitivity. His professional breakthrough came as a violinist in the early 1960s, after which he went on to perform for legendary composers such as Naushad, Roshan, Madan Mohan, C. Ramchandra, and S. D. Burman, eventually becoming the principal violinist for R. D. Burman. 

Building on his experience as a performer, Uttam Singh transitioned into music arrangement, partnering with musician Jagdish. Together, they arranged music for over sixty-five films across multiple Indian languages, including major productions like Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun...!. He also worked closely with Ilaiyaraaja as a music arranger in Tamil cinema, gaining further exposure to diverse compositional styles. The duo later composed music under the name “Uttam–Jagdish” before Singh began his independent career following Jagdish’s death. 

As a solo music director, Uttam Singh reached the height of popularity with Yash Chopra’s Dil To Pagal Hai, earning the Filmfare and Zee Cine Awards for Best Music Director. He followed this success with critically acclaimed scores for Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and Pinjar, the latter noted for its sensitive use of folk and classical elements in collaboration with the Wadali Brothers. Alongside films, he has composed private albums and background scores, maintaining a reputation for musical integrity and emotional depth. Uttam Singh’s body of work stands as a testament to his versatility as a violinist, arranger, and composer in Indian cinema.
