Utsav Lal

Utsav Lal is an Indian pianist, composer, and educator, born on 18 August 1992. He is widely known for his unique approach of performing Indian classical ragas on the piano, a Western instrument not traditionally used in Hindustani music. His style is deeply influenced by the Dhrupad tradition, which gives his music a meditative and expressive quality. 

Utsav Lal received formal training in Western and jazz music. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Jazz from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and later earned a Master’s degree in Contemporary Improvisation from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. His education helped him blend Indian classical music with global styles, creating a distinctive musical identity that bridges cultures. 

Over the years, he has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Southbank Centre in London, and India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. His concerts often feature Indian ragas presented through piano, making classical music accessible to a wider international audience. 

Utsav Lal has released several albums such as Piano Moods of Indian Ragas, Ragas Dance off Piano Keys, Ragas Al Pianoforte, and Ragas to Reels. He is also known for collaborations with both Indian and international artists, blending Indian classical music with Irish and other global traditions. His “Ragas to Reels” project, for example, combines Indian ragas with Irish folk music. 

In addition to performing, Lal is active as a teacher and composer. He has conducted workshops at institutions like the Global Music Institute in India and has composed music for films and stage productions. His work continues to expand the boundaries of Indian classical music by introducing innovative ways of presenting ragas on the piano to audiences around the world.
