Uma Kumar is a Carnatic vocalist, performer, and educator with All India Radio. Founder of Mahati Cultural Academy, she teaches and performs in India and abroad.

Biography

Vidushi Uma Kumar is a Carnatic classical vocalist, musician, and educator associated with the South Indian classical music tradition. She holds a master's degree in Music from Bangalore University and is a “B High” graded artist of All India Radio, reflecting her recognized standing as a performer in the Carnatic music circuit. Her musical work combines concert performance with academic engagement, including research in classical music.

Alongside her performing career, Uma Kumar has been active as a music educator for over two decades. She founded the Mahati Cultural Academy, an initiative dedicated to teaching and promoting Carnatic music among students in India and internationally. Her academic credentials include several music certifications, such as the Vidwat grade examination of the Karnataka State Examination Board, Sangeetha Kousthuba from Subbaramaiah Fine Arts, and Gamaka Pareena from the Gamakakala Parishat. She has also qualified for the UGC National Eligibility Test for Lectureship, further strengthening her role as a teacher and researcher in classical music.

Uma Kumar has presented Carnatic vocal concerts at a range of cultural venues and festivals in India and abroad. Her performances include appearances at institutions such as the Shri Kanchi Shankaracharya Math in Ayodhya and other memorial concerts and cultural programs. In addition to live performances, her recordings and renditions of Carnatic compositions, including devotional pieces such as Narayana Enniro and Odyaduta, are available on digital platforms, contributing to the wider dissemination of Carnatic classical music.
