Trichy Sankaran

Trichy Sankaran, born in 1942 in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, is a distinguished mridangam vidwan whose career spans more than six decades. He received his early training from his cousin, P. A. Venkataraman, and later became the foremost disciple of Palani Subramania Pillai, one of the most influential percussionists in Carnatic music history. Sankaran made his concert debut at a young age and quickly established himself as a musician of exceptional rhythmic understanding and musical sensitivity.

From his early years, he performed with leading Carnatic musicians and earned major recognitions, including the All India Radio Gold Medal and the President of India Award. Since the 1970s, he has lived in Toronto, where he has played a pivotal role in expanding the global reach of Carnatic music. He is the founder of the Tyagaraja Aradhana in Toronto and has consistently performed during the Chennai December Music Season, accompanying top-ranking vocalists and instrumentalists across generations.

As an educator, Trichy Sankaran is widely regarded as a pioneer in bringing Indian classical percussion into formal academic spaces in the West. He is a professor of music at York University and co-founder of its Indian Music Program. Through workshops, lectures, and residencies at major universities across North America, he has introduced Carnatic rhythm, solkattu, and konnakkol to diverse musical communities. His published works, including authoritative textbooks on mridangam technique and rhythmic theory, are widely used by students and scholars.

Beyond traditional concert settings, Sankaran has been deeply involved in cross-cultural and experimental music. He has collaborated with jazz, gamelan, electronic, and world-music ensembles and performed with leading international percussionists and improvisers. As a composer, he has created works for dance, orchestral, and interdisciplinary productions, including commissioned pieces for contemporary Bharatanatyam.

Honored with numerous prestigious awards such as the Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and several international recognitions, Trichy Sankaran remains a central figure in both the performance and pedagogy of Carnatic percussion, bridging tradition with global musical dialogue.
