Thanjavur T.R. Govindarajan

Born on 19 May 1952 in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Thanjavur R. Govindarajan comes from a family of musicians and belongs to the Thanjavur tradition of Carnatic instrumental music. His initial training in thavil was under his father, Thanjavur R. Rajamannar, followed by advanced guidance from Needamangalam Shanmugavadivel Pillai and Nachiyarkovil Raghava Pillai. Over the years, he has accompanied several prominent Carnatic musicians in performances and concerts across India and internationally. Alongside his performance career, he has trained students and served as a lecturer of Thavil at the Tamil Nadu Government Music College, Thiruvaiyaru. In recognition of his contribution to Indian classical music, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2021.
