Biography
Swapnasundari is an Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and vocalist recognized as a leading exponent of Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam. Born in Chennai and later associated with Andhra Pradesh and Delhi, she received extensive training in Kuchipudi under gurus Pasumarty Seetharamaiah, Yeleswarapu Suryaprakash Sarma, and Vempati Chinna Satyam. Her Bharatanatyam training included guidance from distinguished teachers such as K. J. Govindarajan, K. N. Dakshinamoorthy, B. Kalyanasundaram, Adyar K. Lakshman, and Kalanidhi Narayanan. In addition to dance, she also studied classical music under her grandmother C. Sundramma, her mother Sarala, and later under T. Mukta.
As a performer, Swapnasundari is known for the technical precision of her nritta (pure dance) and the expressive depth of her abhinaya (expressive storytelling). Her choreographic work spans both solo performances and dance-drama productions, and she has performed widely across India and internationally. She has also undertaken research into the temple dance traditions of Andhra Pradesh, particularly the Vilasini Natyam repertoire associated with the devadasi tradition, contributing to the documentation and reinterpretation of these historical performance practices.
Swapnasundari has received several major honors for her contributions to Indian classical dance, including the Padma Bhushan (2003) from the Government of India, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and recognition from the Sahitya Kala Parishad. She is the founder and director of the Kuchipudi Dance Centre in Delhi, where she continues to teach and mentor dancers. In addition to performing and teaching, she is also an author and scholar, having written works such as The World of Koochipoodi Dance and Tracing the Roots of the Classical Dance.
