Suresh Vaidyanathan

Dr. Suresh Vaidyanathan is a Carnatic ghatam artist, multi-percussionist, composer, and educator with a sustained presence in Indian classical music and global performance contexts. His percussion training was shaped by Kalaimamani T. R. Harihara Sarma, Grammy Award winner Vikku Vinayakaram, Sangita Kalanidhi Dr. T. V. Gopalakrishnan, and Kalaimamani Umayalpuram Narayanaswami Iyer, while his grounding in melody was strengthened through Carnatic vocal training under P. S. Thyagarajan. His ghatam practice integrates techniques associated with both the Pazhani and Umayalpuram schools.

Dr. Suresh has performed widely across India, Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia, collaborating with senior Carnatic musicians such as Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Balamuralikrishna, Lalgudi Jayaraman, M. S. Gopalakrishnan, T. K. Murthy, Palghat Raghu, and Umayalpuram Sivaraman, as well as internationally recognized artists including Zakir Hussain, Bikram Ghosh, and Pete Lockett. His recording credits include work on Paul Simon’s album So Beautiful or So What!.

Academically, he holds master’s degrees in commerce and music and a diploma in Sanskrit and became the first ghatam artist to receive a PhD in rhythmology from the University of Madras for research on the evolution of the ghatam. He is the founder of the Taalam Academy of Percussion and Solkattu (TAPAS) and is actively involved in percussion education, inclusive music initiatives, and research. His recognitions include top-graded status with All India Radio, a senior fellowship from the Government of India, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and a Guinness World Record.
