Sumitra Guha

Sumitra Guha is a distinguished Indian classical vocalist known for her mastery in both Hindustani and Carnatic music traditions. Born as Sumitra Raju in Andhra Pradesh, India, she was raised in a musically inclined family. Her mother, Rajyalakshmi Raju, was a singer, and this early exposure to music played a significant role in shaping her artistic journey. From a young age, Guha showed a strong inclination toward music and began her training under her mother before receiving formal education in classical music. 

Guha initially trained in Carnatic music under renowned guru S. R. Janakiraman. However, her musical direction expanded when she moved to Santiniketan, where she studied at Visva-Bharati University. It was here that she developed a deep interest in Hindustani classical music. She later trained under eminent gurus such as Pandit A. Kanan and Vidushi Malabika Kanan of the Kirana Gharana, one of the most respected schools in Hindustani music. 

Her career began in earnest in 1972 when she became a B-grade artist at All India Radio (AIR). The same year, she made her debut performance at the famous Tirumala temple in Tirupati. Over time, her talent and dedication earned her recognition, and she rose to become a top-grade artist at AIR. She has performed in numerous national programs, radio concerts, and prestigious music festivals across India. 

Sumitra Guha is especially known for her Hindustani classical vocal style, with a strong emphasis on the Kirana Gharana. Her singing is characterized by deep, meditative alaap, slow and detailed elaboration of ragas, and a strong focus on swara purity. Her performances often carry a spiritual quality, reflecting both technical brilliance and emotional depth. She is also recognized as one of the first women from Andhra Pradesh to establish herself prominently in Hindustani classical music. 

Beyond traditional performances, Guha has explored fusion and global music collaborations. She has worked with international artists and participated in projects that blend Indian classical music with other musical traditions. Her performances have taken her across the world, including the United States, Europe, and Asia, where she has conducted concerts and workshops. 

In recognition of her contributions to Indian music, Sumitra Guha has received several prestigious awards. The Government of India honored her with the Padma Shri in 2010, and she was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2020. These accolades highlight her significant role in promoting Indian classical music globally. 

Apart from performing, she is also dedicated to teaching and has founded the Sumadhur School of Performing Arts, where she trains students in the traditional guru-shishya parampara. Her work continues to inspire future generations of musicians.
