About
Biography
Sumesh Narayanan's artistic identity is shaped by both deep traditional training and an openness to evolving musical contexts. Trained extensively by Dr. Thiruvaarur Bakthavathsalam, he developed a strong foundation in rhythm, repertoire, and the stylistic nuances of Carnatic mridangam. This grounding informs his approach to accompanying vocal and instrumental concerts, where precision and sensitivity remain central to his musical language.
At the same time, Sumesh is known for engaging with projects that expand the boundaries of Indian classical music. His collaborative work includes theater productions, cross-cultural ensembles, and digital media initiatives. As co-creator of the experimental album “Perumal & Providence,” he brought together over 30 classical artists during the pandemic, and as Creative Director of Sound Creed LLP, he curated “EZHISAI: The Reign of Rasas,” a nine-part concert-film series exploring melodic and emotional themes. His performances in productions such as Roysten Abel’s Weaving Voices and the dance–music work Here & Now further highlight his interdisciplinary presence.
Sumesh has appeared in notable venues internationally, including collaborations with artists such as Ustad Shujaat Khan, Vid. Sikkil Gurucharan, Vid. Aruna Sairam, and Rimpa Siva. His recognition includes multiple awards from the Music Academy Madras, the Maharajapuram Youth Excellence Award, and fellowships from CCRT and Sri Shanmukhananda Sabha.
Beyond performance, he co-developed the Mridangam Studio app, designed to support students through tempo tools and practice loops. Sumesh’s work reflects a musician committed equally to heritage and innovation, contributing meaningfully to the evolving landscape of Indian classical percussion.
