Sumantra Ghosal is an Indian filmmaker and advertisement director known for his documentary work on Indian classical arts and cultural figures. As the founder of Equinox, he played a significant role in shaping Indian advertising film production before moving towards long-form documentary storytelling focused on music, dance, and literature.
His films include detailed portraits of leading artists, such as The Speaking Hand: Zakir Hussain and the Art of the Indian Drum and The Unseen Sequence on Bharatanatyam dancer Malavika Sarukkai. Through these works, Ghosal documents both the artistic process and the historical context of Indian classical traditions, presenting them in a structured and research-driven format.
In addition to filmmaking, he has contributed to literary work, including translation projects with Javed Akhtar.
