Biography

Sudha Raghuraman was born into a family where music was not only practiced but lived every day. Her earliest and most profound training came from her grandfather, Sangeetha Bhushanam Shri O. V. Subramanyam, the highly respected doyen of the Tanjavur bani. Her musical environment was further enriched by her father, Shri O. S. Sridhar, and her paternal uncles, the celebrated Carnatic vocalists Sri O. S. Thiagarajan and Sri O. S. Arun. These formative years became a continuous process of “learning by listening,” shaping her musical mind with depth and sensitivity.

In addition to vocal music, Sudha studied violin for eight years under the late Guru V. Janakiraman in Delhi, supported by a CCRT scholarship. She presented her violin arangetram in 1989. With a strong foundation in swaragnanam, she returned to intensive vocal training under her grandfather, who guided her through the subtle grammar of ragas and enabled her to handle even rare and complex melodic forms with confidence. In 1996, she received a scholarship from Sahitya Kala Parishad for advanced musical training.

Sudha’s music reflects a unique blend of creativity and discipline. Gifted with a rich and resonant voice, she is known for her unwavering adherence to sruti and laya. Her style balances vibrant energy with meditative calm, whether in a slow and thoughtful raga exposition, an expressive neraval, or swift and precise swara passages. Her special strength lies in presenting rare and intricate ragas with clarity, emotional depth, and respect for sahitya.

She has performed at major festivals and prestigious platforms in India and abroad. After winning the All India Radio Vocal Music Competition, she was directly graded by AIR without audition, a rare honour, and today she is an A-grade artist. Since 2013, she has also been empanelled with the ICCR as a soloist.

A widely travelled artiste, Sudha has composed music for several dance productions and has over 200 recordings to her credit. Growing up in North India nurtured in her a deep appreciation for Hindustani music, adding another dimension to her artistic vision. She has conducted workshops in Mauritius, the USA, Canada, and other countries.

Her achievements have been recognized with awards such as “Delhi Yuvakalakar” from Sri Shanmukhananda Sangeetha Sabha, “Chitra Kala Sammaan” from the Hindi Sahitya Academy, and, most recently, the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Puraskar from the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
