Biography

Shri Subrata De is an Indian classical sitar player of the Bishnupur gharana, recognized for his depth in traditional raga presentation and his significant contributions to promoting Hindustani classical music globally. Born in Jamshedpur, he began learning sitar at the age of seven and later trained under the noted maestro Pandit Manilal Nag, from whom he inherited the stylistic foundations of the Bishnupur tradition.

His playing reflects elements of dhrupad and gayaki ang, along with a strong command over alap, layakari, and gatkari. Alongside traditional repertoire, he has also worked on raga innovation, with creations such as Shikha Shree, Jogiya Ranjini, Jawahar, BhupMalab, and Lata.

In 2000, he founded Swaranjali, a Delhi-based cultural organization that supports concerts, education, and opportunities for emerging artists. Over the years, he has performed in more than 35 countries and taken part in cross-cultural projects, including the “Flamenco India” collaboration.

His recordings include albums such as Meditation de la India, Ganga, Water in Fury, and Five Elements. Through concerts, festivals, and organizational work, Subrata De continues to contribute to the visibility and continuity of the Bishnupur gharana sitar tradition.
