Biography

Subir Thakur is a tabla player and Kathak artist whose life reflects dedication, discipline, and deep respect for classical tradition. He studied at Adarsha Vidya Vaban in Malbazar and later at Siliguri College of Commerce. His artistic path began with tabla training under his elder brother, Tapan Thakur, which laid a strong rhythmic foundation. This early guidance blossomed under the mentorship of Guru Anand Bodas, the revered maestro of the Farukhabad Gharana. After Guru Bodas’s passing, Subir Thakur continued his journey under the legendary Pandit Shuvankar Banerjee, refining his technique and musical understanding with every stage of learning.

In Kathak, his training began in the Lucknow Gharana under Guru Sri Santosh Kumar. His passion for dance led him to attend several workshops with Pandit Birju Maharaj and Vidushi Saswati Sen. These experiences shaped his artistic voice, allowing him to blend traditional form with personal expression. His rare dual command over Kathak and Tabla has given him a unique place in India’s cultural landscape.

Subir Thakur has had the honor of performing alongside some of the greatest names in Indian classical arts. His journey includes sharing the stage with Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj, Pandit Buddhadeb Dasgupta, and Pandit V. G. Jog. He has also collaborated with Vidushi Saswati Sen, Dr. Malabika Mitra, Pandit Rajendra Gangani, Pandit Krishna Mohan Maharaj, Pandit Rammohan Maharaj, Vidushi Vaswati Mishra, and Vidushi Mamta Maharaj. Each collaboration reflects a living connection between generations of classical artists.

His performances have graced leading festivals and cultural platforms across India, including the Khajuraho and Konark Festivals, Ananya in Delhi, Pallavautsava in Mysore, Ujjayanta Utsav in Agartala, Chakradhar Samaroh in Raigarh, and the Dover Lane Music Conference in Kolkata. Internationally, he has represented India at the Republic Day celebrations in Seychelles, the Pandit Ramgopal Festival in London, the Bengal Festival in Dhaka, and on ICCR-led cultural tours across South America.

Sri Subir Thakur’s life stands as a testament to the power of heritage, discipline, and artistic devotion. Through his mastery of both Kathak and Tabla, he honors the legacy of his gurus while inspiring future generations to embrace the beauty of Indian classical arts.
