Biography
Sourav Mohanty is an Odissi practitioner shaped by recognized guru-shishya traditions within Indian classical dance. His primary training has been under Padma Shri Guru Durga Charan Ranbir, and he continues to receive artistic guidance from Odissi dancer Rahul Acharya. His repertoire reflects stylistic influences associated with the late Guru Debaprasad Das, one of the pioneers of the modern Odissi movement.
He is a recipient of the National Senior Scholarship for Odissi awarded by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT), Ministry of Culture, Government of India. This recognition places him within the national framework for advanced training and professional development in classical arts.
In January 2026, Mohanty presented multiple programs at the Ilamayil Thirami Festival at Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai. These included Adi Ashtakam, a choreographic interpretation of the eight stanzas of Adi Shankaracharya, and a 90-minute solo recital featuring Sūryāṣṭaka—an offering to the Sun God—and Sthayee, a pure dance exposition.
Alongside stage performance, he engages in educational initiatives. Through lecture-demonstrations such as Vistaar, he introduces students to the grammar of Odissi, including hand gestures, movement vocabulary, and narrative techniques.
In addition to his work in dance, Sourav Mohanty is also a yoga scholar. His practice integrates disciplined physical training, classical form, and pedagogical engagement, contributing to both performance and transmission of the Odissi tradition.
