Biography
Sivamani, whose full name is Anandan Sivamani, is one of India’s most celebrated percussionists, widely known by the name “Drums Sivamani.” He was born on 1 December 1959 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India. From a very young age, he showed extraordinary interest in music, beginning to play drums at the age of seven. His father, S. M. Anandan, was also a well-known drummer, which helped shape Sivamani’s early musical journey. He started his professional career at a very young age and quickly gained recognition for his exceptional rhythm sense and energetic performances.
Sivamani is known for his versatility and mastery over a wide range of percussion instruments, including drums, octoban, darbuka, ghatam, udukai, and kanjira. His style blends elements of Indian classical, fusion, jazz, and world music, making him a unique figure in the global music scene. Over the years, he has collaborated with many legendary musicians and composers, most notably A. R. Rahman, with whom he shares a long-standing professional and personal relationship. His work as Rahman’s lead percussionist brought him international fame and allowed him to perform on some of the most iconic Indian film soundtracks.
Throughout his career, Sivamani has performed across the world in countries such as the United States, Russia, Canada, and the Middle East. He has contributed to numerous popular Indian films, including Roja, Lagaan, Dil Se, and Rockstar, adding powerful rhythmic elements to their music. He has also collaborated with renowned artists like Zakir Hussain and participated in global music tours. His performances are known for their high energy, creativity, and ability to connect with diverse audiences.
In addition to live performances, Sivamani has released several albums such as Mahaleela, Drums on Fire, and Pure Silk, showcasing his experimental approach to rhythm and sound. Sivamani’s contributions to music have been widely recognized. He received the Kalaimamani award from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2009 and was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2019 by the Government of India. These accolades reflect his impact on Indian and global music. Even today, he continues to inspire young musicians with his passion, innovation, and dedication to rhythm.
